The loop doesn't need to be ridden fast or young. It needs a pace that lets you look at it.

Most of what you read about the Ha Giang Loop is written by and for backpackers in their twenties: long days, big convoys, late nights. That is one way to do it. Ours is a different trip, four days instead of three, about 50 to 100 km a day, a private room with its own bathroom every night and an early night before an unhurried morning.

Each trip is only your own people, usually two to four. You set the pace with your guide, who was born in Ha Giang and rides these passes most weeks.

Riding is optional.

  1. 01

    By private car

A private 7-seat car and driver for your group: $720 for one or two people, $96 more for each extra person, up to four. Nobody rides at all, and every stop and view on the loop is the same.

  2. 02

As a passenger on an Easy Rider

$315 per person. You sit behind your own local rider-guide (one rider per traveller), with a helmet fitted before you leave, riding armour and a raincoat. You don't need a licence or any riding experience. Many people who get carsick on winding roads find the open bike far easier than the car.

How long the days really are.

Day one is short: about 50 km, leaving Ha Giang City at 9:00, with Heaven's Gate, the Twin Mountains and a short walk into Lung Khuy cave, and into the Dao village of Nam Dam by about half past two, so the afternoon is free. Day two is about 90 km to Dong Van, with the Hmong King's palace and Lung Cu flag tower on the way.

Day three is the long one, about 100 km from 8:30 to about 17:30, but broken up by the Ma Pi Leng skywalk, an hour sitting in a boat on the Nho Que river, lunch and two viewpoint stops. Day four is about 80 km home, with an optional swim at the Du Gia waterfall, ending in Ha Giang City at about 16:30.

The comfortable parts, already included.

A private room with its own bathroom all three nights. Your big bags stay at our office or your Ha Giang hotel, and your luggage is moved ahead between the homestays, so you never carry it. Every meal on the road, drinking water, all fees and permits, the boat and the skywalk are in the price, and so is travel insurance worth 7,500,000 VND per person.

On safety: the riders and drivers never drink the night before or during a riding day, and the route changes if rain or fog makes a section unsafe. More on that on our safety page.

Older travellers on the Ha Giang Loop: honest answers.

Is the Ha Giang Loop too hard for older travellers?

Not at this pace. The four-day trip covers about 50 to 100 km a day, with a short first day and a free afternoon. In the private car nobody rides at all; on the Easy Rider you sit as a passenger behind a local rider-guide. A few stops involve some walking, such as the short trek into Lung Khuy cave.

Private car or Easy Rider?

The private car means no riding at all: $720 for one or two people, $96 more for each extra person, up to four. The Easy Rider is $315 per person and needs no licence or experience. People who get carsick on winding roads often find the open bike easier than the car.

Day three, about 100 km from 8:30 to about 17:30, broken up by the Ma Pi Leng skywalk, an hour in a boat on the Nho Que river, lunch and two viewpoint stops.

Do we carry our luggage?

No. Big bags stay at our office or your Ha Giang hotel, and your luggage is moved ahead between the homestays.

Will the nights be quiet?

Yes. The four-day trip is not a party tour: dinner with the host family or a restaurant in Dong Van old town, then an early night in a private room with its own bathroom.
